The images

Almost all the photographs in this collection count as ‘landscapes’, in that they encompass broad outdoor vistas rather than focusing on a partcular object. When I can, I like to take ‘natural landscapes’ that don’t include anything man-made.

What attracts me are things like the way at a certain angle the sunlight can bring an otherwise dull litter of boulders and seaweed into sparkling life, the infinity of patterns on the surface of a calm blue sea and the way the clouds brush across the early morning sky creating masterpieces.

I like to get to grips with the tiny details of the landscape, from the pebbles, limpets and leaves at your feet all the way to a distant hill or headland. Getting everything nicely framed, focused and well exposed is a large part of the fun.

Capturing these images often requires working at unsociable hours, to catch the sun and shadows at their best and avoid the crowds. Is that the worst thing about this branch of photography, or the best? There really is nothing quite like standing behind your tripod at low tide on some deserted beach, stamping your feet to keep warm while waiting for the sun to come up.
