Sunlit rock and breaking wave
Sunlit rock and breaking wave
I took this shot early in the morning of 6 January, soon after sunrise. I wanted to catch the sunlight reflecting on the isolated rock just offshore as the waves broke over it. If the waves were closer than the one in this shot they cast a shadow and I lost the reflections.

I wanted to 'stop' the wave, but the light level was still quite low, and even with a high ISO I had to settle for losing some depth of field. I am happy with the way this shot captured the warmth of the light a few minutes after the sun appeared.

But the warmth of the light is misleading. The temperature was well below freezing and there was a cold wind coming in across the bay. After trying different angles and settings for half an hour I had to stop to save my frozen fingers.
